Wild Makers is a creative partnership between artists and makers Giovanna Mazzella and Cath Gibson, brought together by a shared love of nature, making and growing. Their practice is rooted in a lifelong curiosity of natural materials, traditional processes, and the wild Tasmanian landscape, with both bringing diverse creative skills and experiences to their work.

Giovanna was born in Sydney and, from the age of eight, travelled and lived in Malaysia, India and Japan before returning to Australia in her mid-twenties. These early experiences of different cultures, landscapes and ways of making have continued to influence her creative practice. Her diverse background spans horticulture, art, photography, landscape design and working with natural materials. Her practice includes botanical casting, beekeeping and traditional beeswax candle making, reflecting her enduring fascination with the living landscape and the materials it provides.

Cath grew up on a farm in Northern Tasmania, where a strong connection to the land, family and a community tradition of growing and making shaped her creative life. Her eclectic creative journey has included painting, drawing, ceramics, mosaics, weaving, woodworking, gardening, landscaping and building.

Giovanna and Cath create from Wild Hive studio, a unique handcrafted, timber and earth walled studio located in picturesque Glen Huon. They forage according to the seasons, for native and wild plant materials,  gathered from their own gardens and the surrounding Huon Valley landscape,  transforming a variety of plants including vines, willows, sedges and native grasses into unique creations such as life size animals, birds nests, basketry and sculptural garden structures. They also salvage recycled and reclaimed timber to create unique handmade pieces for the home and garden, bringing together their complementary skills and shared appreciation for natural materials, traditional craft, resourcefulness and the simple pleasure of making something by hand.
