Vicki Taiwo’s journey through textile design is inspired through travel and the opportunity to study the traditional weaving and dyeing techniques of Nigeria, Scotland, Indonesia and Japan.

Born and raised in Melbourne she has rich childhood memories of her father's weaving mill where he wove fabric for the fashion houses in Collins Street, Melbourne in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.

Watching and learning from the indigo dyers in Kano Nigeria was a life changing experience for Vicki. Not only was she amazed at their skill but she became aware for the first time that the process of making was something that both created and affected the individual through relation to the environment.

In the late 1980s Vicki embarked on a 28 year apprenticeship in double Ikat weaving with the masters of this traditional and disappearing craft, found only in the remote village of Tengenan, Bali where she occasionally still weaves. This has also given Vicki the opportunity to travel to most of the islands east of Bali where she learnt how the islands’ cultures related to their weaving patterns and dyeing.

Vicki's passion is to preserve the ancient and grass root techniques used in textile design across cultures. She has exhibited her work in Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales
