Pengbo Wu is a Chinese-born, Tasmania-based artist whose multidisciplinary practice explores memory, identity, and transformation through painting, sculpture, and installation.

His autobiographical artworks unfold like diary entries—records of lived experience, memory, and the passage of time. In the studio, he translates the rhythms of daily life into visual fragments, which he revisits, filters, and expands to explore broader themes of persistence, patience, fate, and the ways we are shaped by experience.

Wu draws deeply on his understanding of Chinese classical painting and calligraphy, allowing their forms, gestures, and philosophies to emerge intuitively within an abstract visual language. Rather than preserving these traditions, he allows them to evolve, fracture, and be deconstructed through process, chance, and external influences. The inherited becomes fluid; the familiar is continually transformed.

At the foundation of Wu’s practice is his Chinese heritage, yet his identity exists within an increasingly complex cultural landscape. His wife is Australian, and his daughter is both Chinese and Australian. Through his family, his history has crossed cultures and generations, taking on new meanings in a different place.

For Wu, history is not fixed. It is something continually rewritten through time, relationships, memory, and experience. His work reflects this tension between what is inherited and what is becoming; between holding onto the past and allowing it to change.
