Donald Coventry is a painter whose practice draws on a substantial professional background in Australian art, curatorial practice and environmental leadership. He has worked as a curator, directed Latrobe Regional Gallery, served as Foundation Director of Cairns Regional Gallery, and developed and toured exhibitions nationally. His formal background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from the University of Melbourne.

Now based in a working studio on the banks of the Huon River at Judbury, Donald has returned to painting as the central focus of his creative life. His work draws on landscape, weather, memory and changing light, but is not concerned with literal description. He is particularly drawn to nocturnes, where darkness, reflected light and uncertain forms create atmosphere and tension.

Working primarily in acrylic and mixed media, Donald builds paintings through layered colour, broken brushwork, abrasion, erasure and revision. Forms are simplified and allowed to move between recognition and abstraction. Light is often held within dark or weathered surfaces, emerging gradually rather than declaring itself immediately.

His long involvement in environmental organisations also informs the work. Landscape is understood not simply as scenery, but as something living, vulnerable and continually changing.

The Huon River, surrounding hills, orchards, mountains and volatile weather of southern Tasmania recur throughout his paintings, which seek to convey the physical and emotional presence of place and to be felt as much as seen.
